Veuve Clicquot was founded in 1772 by Philippe Clicquot. Veuve Clicquot is now one of the largest Champagne houses in Champagne, France. After Philippe spread the brand across Europe, Russia, and the United States, his son François Clicquot, joined him at the head of the house in 1798. Seven years later, François died before his expected time and his widow, Barbe Ponsardin, took over the family business at the age of 27 years old. The House of Clicquot would change its name to ‘Veuve Clicquot’ (The Widow Clicquot) in honor of the widow.
