Detail
Chicago's version of beskbrännvin, a bitter Swedish schnapps made with wormwood, is Jeppson's Malört. Wormwood, originally discovered in the Middle Ages for its therapeutic uses, is most commonly connected to the farms of Skåne, Sweden, where it grows naturally. During the early 1900s, it was the most popular beverage in Sweden and was brought to the United States with almost a million Swedes who emigrated at that time. Among the immigrants was Carl Jeppson, a resident of Ystad, Skåne.
