The local beskbrännvin (a bitter Swedish schnapps made with wormwood) in Chicago is Jeppson's Malört. Historically connected to the farms of Skåne, Sweden, where wormwood grows wild, wormwood was first discovered in antiquity and was thought to have therapeutic properties. It accompanied the approximately 1 million Swedes who emigrated to the United States in the early 1900s and was the most popular drink in Sweden at the time. Ystad, Skåne native Carl Jeppson was one among the immigrants.
